R.E.M | Short film | Josean Perez
R.E.M. (Not Affiliated with Solar X Cinema) was a unique and challenging project developed by Josean Perez during his time at Middle Tennessee State University. Created as part of a soundscape-focused filmmaking assignment, the project required students to build a narrative in which sound played a central role in the storytelling experience.
As Perez explored concepts that would best showcase the power of sound design, he chose to venture into the horror genre—an area outside of his usual creative interests. Recognizing that horror films often rely heavily on suspense, atmospheric audio, and carefully crafted tension, he saw the genre as an ideal opportunity to emphasize the emotional impact of sound within a narrative.
Directed by Perez and starring Aldo Cano, R.E.M. follows a man attempting to fall asleep as mysterious noises begin to emerge throughout his home. Through the strategic use of sound, pacing, and suspense, the film creates an unsettling atmosphere that keeps audiences engaged while demonstrating the critical role audio plays in cinematic storytelling.
The project challenged Perez to think creatively about the relationship between sound and visual storytelling, further expanding his filmmaking skills and reinforcing the importance of every sensory element in crafting an immersive audience experience.

The film follows the story of two brothers whose lives take different paths as they wrestle with the values, expectations, and lessons passed down by their father. Through this character-driven narrative, Perez sought to explore themes of family, identity, and personal choice.
